Should I avoid selection grid?

Selection grid seems to spam call the current selected item of the grid, which sounds really bad because its unneeded CPU drainage. Program doesnt need to constantly check that "yes indeed the current selection is selected". I am trying to use this feature for RPG race selection, and system like that would be really useful for all kinds of UI stuff, but if its nonstop calling the value then it doesnt seem good. Am I misunderstanding something or is selection grid in its current form...
